Where Have You Gone?
words and music by Dan Sheehan
from the Banter album Urban Pastures

A child lays down in bed of straw
He dreams of running with the fox
From all the stories he's been told
The stories passed down come alive
Within his dreams
They speak of ancestors brave and wise and bold

The child rises with the morning Sun
The day has come to him
Bringing the fruits of yesterday
His father teaches him the ways of life
As his father taught him
The boy awaits the games they play

Racing freely through the forest
Leaping up into the laughing wind
To catch the eagle in the sky
Dancing 'round the fire at the great feasts
When the moon was full and bright
The moments radiate with life

Men filled with confidence
To know what's best decide for others
The way that they were meant to live
To foreign lands they go
Bestowing wisdom on the young they take
Convincing themselves that they give

Rememb'ring times of running through the forest
Leaping up into the wind
To catch the eagle in the sky
Dancing 'round the fire at the great feasts
When the moon was full and bright
The mem'ries fade as years go by

Somewhere not far away
Another day a mother cries out,
"Where have you gone my only son?"
'Though it's been so long now
Her hope she just cannot let go of
"Where have you gone my darling one?"

The boy is grateful to be here
Amongst the foreign minds
Who took him in when his parents were gone
But there will come a day
When mem'ries long supressed will haunt him
"Where have you gone my darling one?"
